Inspection
Looking without dismantling
During an inspection we determine the condition of your engine without taking it apart. To do so we remove the injectors and enter the cylinder through the injector bore with a video borescope, after which you can look around three hundred and sixty degrees: the complete cylinder liner, the honing pattern, the piston crown and the valves, all without a single cylinder head having to be lifted.
What the images tell you
Those images provide hard information. If the honing pattern is no longer visible and the liner looks smooth, the oil runs down the wall and your engine starts consuming oil. If the engine smokes, the colour of that smoke says something about the condition of your injectors or your liners. These are exactly the things you can't see from the engine room floor, while they determine your consumption and your maintenance planning.
One day's work, plenty of certainty
An inspection usually takes a day, depending on the size of your engine and on what else is being combined with it. That is little time, certainly compared with the certainty it gives you for the coming years.

From scope to advice
We come to your vessel or you moor at our quay, after which the injectors come out, the scope goes in and we record what we see. We take images of every cylinder, so you can assess them yourself and compare them at the next inspection.
If we find something, we discuss it straight away with your engineer or technical superintendent, and not in general terms: this liner needs attention and that one should be done at the next port stay. We then order the parts in advance, so everything is ready the moment your vessel arrives.
Combining with other work
We like to combine jobs, because that saves you time in port. If cylinders have to come out anyway, they go to the workshop while we scope the rest of the engine in the meantime, so you can fit two jobs into the same window.
Crankshaft deflection measurement at dry-docking
In our view, a dry-docking should always include a crankshaft deflection measurement. A vessel on the slipway rests on blocks, and if one is positioned wrongly, the hull twists and you see it in your engine. We therefore measure the crankshaft deflection when the vessel is dry and once more when she is back in the water, so you always have the same reference before you start up. The engine is the heart of your vessel, and you don't want to leave that to chance.
Our possibilities
Video borescope inspection of the cylinders
With a video borescope we enter the cylinder through the injector bore and you look around 360 degrees: liner, honing pattern, piston crown and valves, without a cylinder head coming off. The injectors which are out anyway, we pressure-test and reset straight away.

Reporting and follow-up
You receive images and concrete advice: per cylinder what is going on and when it needs to be done. You can use that report with your insurer, classification society and owner, and we order the parts ahead of time so that everything is ready at your next port stay.

Why choose Louis Baes Repairs?
24/7 on standby, on location worldwide
We are reachable day and night and come to the port where you are berthed, wherever in the world that may be. You don't get a call centre, but someone who knows your engines. If time is tight, we run a day and a night shift, so your vessel is back under way sooner.
Two workshops of our own on deep water
IJmuiden and Harlingen both lie directly on the quay at deep water, with all machinery and measuring equipment within reach. What has to be done ashore is done with us, without middlemen, and you are welcome to walk through the workshop and see your parts yourself.
Specialist in all major brands
Wärtsilä, MaK, MAN, Scania, Deutz and Caterpillar are part of our daily work, and we handle other brands too. Through LBR Parts we supply new and reconditioned parts from our own stock, so you don't have to wait for a factory delivery and your downtime stays short.
Everything agreed with you
With us you always know where you stand. If we come across something on your engine during the work, you hear about it straight away, with pictures and readings. Rejected parts we set aside so you can inspect them yourself, and nothing leaves without your approval.
